I was thinking of a bunch of James Taylor songs when I wrote this. I don’t know whether that comes through, but I remember it really clearly, and I can hear little moments (especially in the piano part) that pay tribute to the great JT.

I love circles in music – harmonic cycles, repeated patterns that bring you back to where you started... it all feels so clever and so satisfying at the same time when I hear it in other songs or pieces like Bach inventions. Circles in life don’t seem to carry the same joy. We want to move on, make progress, improve... but life continues to repeat, to bring us back to where we were yesterday, or a year ago, or when we were small. It always will. I tried to bring some of the ambiguity of circles to this song.

Of course, at this point in the whole collection of songs there’s another circle that’s nearly complete. Jesse Hayes, whose brilliant design encases this record, described the cycle of the album: “We find ourselves, then we find love, we struggle with love and life only to find that in the end, friendship is what connects it all and ground both identity and love.”
